49ers Restructure Coaching Staff: Sorensen Out, Kubiak Promoted
The San Francisco 49ers have announced significant changes to their coaching staff. Nick Sorensen has been removed from his position as defensive coordinator, and passing game specialist Klay Kubiak has been promoted to offensive coordinator. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the moves on Wednesday, adding that he will continue calling the offensive plays.
Potential New Role for Sorensen
Shanahan expressed interest in retaining Sorensen, 46, within the organization. A potential move to special teams coordinator is under consideration, filling the vacancy left by Brian Schneider, who was dismissed earlier this week. Additionally, assistant head coach Brandon Staley is reportedly in the running to take over as the new defensive coordinator.
Klay Kubiak’s Promotion
Kubiak, 36, has been with the 49ers for four seasons, serving in various capacities. He is the son of Gary Kubiak, a former NFL head coach, and the brother of Klint Kubiak, the current offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints. Klay Kubiak recently handled play-calling duties during San Francisco’s 47-24 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, where the team gained 436 yards but ultimately fell short in a disappointing end to the season.
49ers’ Struggles This Season
The 49ers concluded the season with a 6-11 record, failing to make the playoffs after years of consistent success, including four NFC Championship appearances in the previous five seasons. The team ranked 29th in points allowed, conceding 25.6 points per game, including 87 points in their final two games.
Sorensen’s Tenure
Sorensen joined the 49ers as a defensive assistant in 2022 and was promoted to defensive coordinator in March 2024. He previously served as an assistant coach with the Seattle Seahawks (2013-2020) and as special teams coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. Sorensen had replaced Steve Wilks, who served as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator in 2023 following DeMeco Ryans, now the head coach of the Houston Texans.
The 49ers are expected to make further announcements as they finalize their coaching staff for the upcoming season.
