Wander Franco’s Trial Postponed to June 2025 Amid Witness Availability Issues
The trial of Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, originally set to begin Thursday, has been postponed to June 2, 2025, due to a lack of witness availability. Franco is facing serious charges in the Dominican Republic, including sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of a minor, and human trafficking. If convicted, the 23-year-old could face a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
Postponement Due to Witness Issues
According to ESPN, only three out of 36 scheduled witnesses were present in the courtroom in Puerto Plata. The majority of the witnesses could not be located, leading the court to reschedule the trial to allow time for their attendance. Franco was present in the courtroom for Thursday’s proceedings.
The Allegations
The charges stem from allegations that emerged in August 2023, when Franco was accused of engaging in a relationship with a 14-year-old girl. These allegations surfaced shortly after his first MLB All-Star selection, casting a shadow over his rising career. In response to the allegations, MLB placed Franco on administrative leave in August 2023 and later moved him to the restricted list in July 2024. He remains under investigation by MLB.
Additional Legal Troubles
Franco’s legal troubles have deepened. In November 2024, he was arrested in the Dominican Republic for illegal use and possession of a firearm following an altercation. A separate court date for these charges is pending, adding another layer of complexity to his legal situation.
Impact on Career and Contract
Franco remains under contract with the Tampa Bay Rays, who signed him to an 11-year, $182 million extension in 2021, one of the most lucrative deals for a player of his age. However, he is not receiving payment while on MLB’s restricted list. The team has not issued any recent public statements regarding Franco’s status or future with the organization.
A Fall from Grace
Once considered one of MLB’s brightest young stars, Franco’s career has been overshadowed by these legal battles. His first All-Star selection in 2023 highlighted his potential, but the ongoing investigations and criminal charges have placed his future in professional baseball in serious jeopardy.
As the June 2025 trial date approaches, the spotlight remains on the gathering of witnesses and the outcome of MLB’s investigation, which could further impact Franco’s standing in the league.
