South Africa’s Nortje ruled out of Champions Trophy

Anrich Nortje Ruled Out of ICC Champions Trophy Due to Back Injury

South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy due to a persistent back injury, dealing another blow to his international career. Nortje, originally named in South Africa’s squad earlier this week, was deemed unfit to recover in time for the team’s opening Group B clash against Afghanistan on February 21.

Injury Woes Continue for Nortje

The 30-year-old pacer has struggled with injuries in recent years, missing significant cricketing action. He last played a Test match in March 2023 and hasn’t appeared in a One-Day International (ODI) since September of the same year. Despite his fitness issues, Nortje featured in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where South Africa reached the final but lost to India.

Replacement Yet to Be Named

South African cricket officials have not yet named Nortje’s replacement, but speculation is rife that seam bowler Gerald Coetzee, who has recently recovered from a groin strain, could get the nod. Another option is the promising 18-year-old fast bowler Kwena Maphaka, who has impressed in domestic cricket.

Tough Group Ahead

South Africa faces a challenging road in Group B, which includes powerhouse teams like England and Australia, alongside Afghanistan. Nortje’s absence leaves a significant gap in South Africa’s pace attack, and the team will rely on other bowlers to step up in his absence.

South Africa’s management will hope to find a suitable replacement soon as they gear up for the Champions Trophy, aiming to make a strong start in their campaign despite this setback.
