Bregman, Devers Prioritize Winning as Red Sox Shape Infield Plans
As the Boston Red Sox gather for spring training, early chatter about a potential position conflict between star infielders Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman has quickly been put to rest. What started as outside speculation over who would claim third base has evolved into a picture of unity, with both players emphasizing their focus on winning above all else.
Initial Stir Over Third Base Clears Quickly
Tension seemed to spark earlier in the week when Devers, the Red Sox’s long-standing third baseman, was asked if he would be open to shifting positions to accommodate Bregman, a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove third baseman newly signed from the Houston Astros. Devers firmly stated that third base was his spot, fueling rumors of a brewing territorial battle.
However, Bregman downplayed any rivalry when speaking to reporters the following day. “I think everybody here believes in their abilities,” Bregman said. “For me, it’s simple. I’ll play wherever helps this team win. We’ve got the talent to do something special if we work together.”
Bregman and Devers Show Team Chemistry
Those concerns were further eased when the two infielders were seen chatting comfortably during defensive drills. Later that evening, Bregman and Devers joined several teammates for dinner at manager Alex Cora’s rental house. Cora noted that the pair seemed relaxed and engaged, even offering each other tips during practice earlier in the day.
“I’m super excited to be his teammate,” Bregman said about Devers. “He’s a great player. Everyone in this clubhouse cares about winning. That’s what matters. I’ll play wherever A.C. wants me to play.”
Prospect Kristian Campbell Adds to Infield Picture
While Bregman and Devers are central to the Red Sox’s infield plans, a rising star could also factor into the equation. Top prospect Kristian Campbell, ranked No. 7 by MLB Pipeline, is being closely monitored after a breakout 2024 season in the minors. The 22-year-old hit .330 with 20 home runs, 32 doubles, and 24 stolen bases across three levels.
Campbell has been focusing exclusively on second base during workouts, a position he primarily played as a freshman at Georgia Tech before being drafted by the Red Sox in 2023. His athleticism and offensive potential have earned him comparisons to some of the game’s most dynamic young talents.
Bregman praised the young infielder, saying, “Everyone saw how special he was last year. He’s got the tools to be a big part of what we’re building.”
Red Sox Eye Flexibility in the Infield
Manager Alex Cora made it clear that nothing is set in stone for Opening Day. While Devers is expected to hold down third base, and Bregman’s natural spot is there as well, the Red Sox value versatility. Bregman’s willingness to move, Campbell’s emergence, and the overall desire to field the best lineup possible give Cora several configurations to consider.
“We’ll get the best nine guys out there,” Cora said. “It’s a good problem to have. These guys are pros. They get it.”
As spring training progresses, the focus in Boston’s infield has shifted from potential friction to optimism. With Devers, Bregman, and Campbell leading the charge, the Red Sox believe they are assembling a group capable of returning to postseason contention.
