Brent Rooker and Athletics Finalize $60M, Five-Year Contract Extension
Designated hitter Brent Rooker and the Oakland Athletics have reached an agreement on a five-year, $60 million contract extension, according to multiple media reports. The New York Post revealed on Monday night that the deal includes a $10 million signing bonus and offers incentives that could push the total value to $92 million over six years.
Rooker, 30, took a winding path to success, spending time with three different teams before finding his stride with the Athletics in 2023. That year marked a turning point as Rooker earned an All-Star selection, showcasing his power at the plate. He batted .246 with 30 home runs and 69 RBIs across 137 games. Building on that success, he delivered an even stronger performance the following season, hitting .293 with 39 home runs and 112 RBIs in 145 games, cementing his role as a key contributor in the A’s lineup.
This extension underscores Oakland’s commitment to building around a core of proven talent as the team aims to turn its fortunes around. Rooker’s deal is part of a broader trend of aggressive moves by the Athletics this offseason. Earlier this summer, the team inked right-hander Luis Severino to a three-year, $67 million contract, bolstering their pitching staff. Additionally, the A’s traded for left-hander Jeffrey Springs from the Tampa Bay Rays, further strengthening their rotation.
With these signings and acquisitions, Oakland appears focused on creating a competitive roster capable of making a playoff push in the coming seasons. Rooker’s deal solidifies his place as a cornerstone player for the franchise as they continue to retool and build momentum for the future.
