Australia’s Steve Smith consults ‘Mr Cricket’ for help with slump

Australia’s Steve Smith is considering a “less is more” approach to training after seeking advice from former teammate Mike Hussey. The 35-year-old Smith, once Australia’s batting linchpin, has struggled for form in the ongoing series against India, managing just 19 runs in three innings across the first two tests.

Despite returning to his preferred number four position in the batting order after a stint as an opener, Smith has not found his rhythm, prompting concerns over his future at the top level. To regain his form, he turned to Hussey, who excelled in his later years, scoring eight centuries after turning 35 before retiring with an impressive career average of 51.52.

Hussey, known as “Mr Cricket” for his enthusiasm, advised Smith to reconsider his training volume, emphasizing the importance of mental and physical freshness rather than excessive practice. “As you get older, it’s not about hitting more balls. It’s about coming into games fresh,” Hussey shared.

Following this advice, Smith skipped a training session ahead of the Adelaide test, hoping to be well-rested for a big score. However, his attempt ended in disappointment, as he was dismissed for just two runs.

Smith’s recent struggles have raised questions about his defensive technique, particularly against India’s pacers. Fans are also questioning how long the team can persist with a veteran player amid a squad that is crying out for regeneration.

Reflecting on the evolving nature of wickets and Australian batting, Smith noted that players like Travis Head and Mitch Marsh have been successful by adopting a more aggressive approach, going harder at the ball and taking risks. Smith, while agreeing that pressure must be applied to bowlers, acknowledged that striking a balance in more bowler-friendly conditions remains a challenge.

As the series continues, Smith is focused on adapting his game and finding the right balance to succeed in these tricky conditions.
