Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove has been discharged from the hospital after undergoing surgery to implant a heart starter device, the club confirmed on Friday. The 22-year-old collapsed on the pitch during Fiorentina’s Serie A match against Inter Milan on December 1, leading to the abandonment of the game. Following the incident, Bove underwent an operation on Tuesday to fit an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), a device that can prevent fatal cardiac arrest by delivering a shock to restore normal heart rhythm.
Club spokesperson Arturo Mastronardi confirmed Bove’s discharge but declined to comment further. The ICD, while life-saving, is not permitted in Serie A. Italian media reports suggest that Bove will have the option to decide whether to have the device removed, which could potentially allow him to return to playing in the top flight.
Bove’s situation mirrors that of Christian Eriksen, who also required an ICD after suffering a cardiac arrest during a 2021 European Championship match. Eriksen was unable to continue playing for Inter Milan and eventually joined Brentford after his contract was terminated.
