NZ considering Santner recall for Southee’s farewell in third Test.

New Zealand will make a final decision on recalling spinner Mitch Santner for the third Test against England after inspecting the conditions at Hamilton’s Seddon Oval on Saturday. Will Young has already been confirmed in the squad, stepping in for Devon Conway, who is home for the birth of his child.

Santner, who hasn’t played since New Zealand’s historic 3-0 series win over India in October, may make a return depending on the pitch conditions. The left-arm spinner was instrumental in that series, taking 13 wickets in Pune. However, New Zealand captain Tom Latham emphasized that the final decision would be made after assessing the pitch on the day of the toss.

“Will Young will come into the team and he’ll open up with me,” Latham said on Friday. “It’s a great opportunity for Youngy, who has played really nicely recently and deserves this chance.” Young was named Player of the Series during the India tour and will now have a chance to showcase his skills at home.

If Santner is included, one of the four seamers from the previous tests may be dropped. However, Latham made it clear that Tim Southee, who is playing his final Test match, would not be the one to make way. Southee, 36, is retiring from Test cricket after this match, marking the end of his 16-year career. He has been one of New Zealand’s most successful bowlers and a key leader in the team.

“Tim’s looking forward to it, and we’re all looking forward to it,” Latham said. “He’s going to be remembered as one of the greats of our game. The numbers back that up, but it’s also about the leadership and legacy he leaves behind.”

New Zealand fans have been out in strong numbers despite the team’s disappointing performance in the series so far, and Latham expressed his hope that the team can deliver a strong performance in the final match.

England have made one change, with Matthew Potts replacing Chris Woakes in their lineup.
