Shams Aalam Creates History with World Record at 14th National Takshila Open Water Swimming Competition
Shams Aalam, a trailblazing Para swimmer from Rathaus village in Bihar’s Madhubani district, made history last Sunday by becoming the first swimmer with paraplegia to complete the National Takshila Open Water Swimming Competition. Held in Patna, the event’s 14th edition featured a challenging 13-km course along the river Ganga, from Shiva Ghat Digha to Law College Ghat.
Organized by the Bihar Swimming Association under the Swimming Federation of India, the competition saw participation from around 50 swimmers representing various states, including male, female, and Para athletes. Shams completed the grueling course in just over two hours, setting a world record for the longest open water swim by a swimmer with paraplegia, officially certified by the World Records Union.
From Adversity to Triumph
Shams began his sports journey as a black belt in martial arts but faced life-altering challenges at age 24 due to a failed surgery that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Encouraged by his doctor and community, he turned to swimming and, by 2012, clinched silver and bronze at a state championship. Over the years, Shams amassed multiple medals at state, national, and international levels, including gold, silver, and bronze at the 24th National Para-Swimming Championship in Goa.
A TEDx speaker and an advocate for Para sports and accessibility, Shams has been recognized by the U.S. Department of State, the President of India, and the Government of Bihar for his relentless efforts in promoting inclusion for persons with disabilities.
Support from CBM India
Shams is one of 17 Para athletes supported by CBM India, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating an inclusive society. Through its Inclusive Sports program, funded by a CSR initiative, CBM India provides tailored financial and resource support to athletes with disabilities.
Reflecting on his achievement, Shams expressed gratitude for CBM India’s support:
“Breaking this world record is a dream come true. CBM India’s sponsorship has been a game-changer, offering me the financial stability and confidence to focus on my performance. This backing has transformed my career and allowed me to chase my dreams with unwavering determination.”
Sony Thomas, Executive Director of CBM India, lauded Shams’ achievement, stating:
“Shams’ success showcases the incredible potential within every individual when provided with equal opportunities. His journey exemplifies the power of inclusion and empowerment.”
Promoting Inclusion in Competitive Sports
The leadership of the Bihar Swimming Association praised Shams’ accomplishment and the inclusion of Para athletes in this year’s competition. Prof. Maya Shankar, President, along with Mr. Ram Bilas Pandey, Secretary, and Mr. Pankaj Kumar, Joint Secretary, remarked:
“The participation of Para swimmers underscores the untapped potential in Indian swimming. This event proves that competitive swimming can be made accessible to everyone with the right support. We hope this inspires other sporting events to embrace inclusion as a standard practice.”
A Milestone for Inclusive Sports in India
Shams Aalam’s historic world record not only sets a new benchmark in open water swimming but also strengthens the call for greater inclusivity in sports. His success at the National Takshila Open Water Swimming Competition represents a significant step toward breaking barriers between Para and mainstream sports, paving the way for more inclusive sporting opportunities across India.
