San Jose Earthquakes and Carlos Gruezo Mutually Part Ways After Two Seasons

The San Jose Earthquakes and Carlos Gruezo have officially parted ways, with the club announcing the mutual decision on Tuesday. The Ecuadorian international, who joined the Quakes as a designated player ahead of the 2023 MLS season, will now move on from the club after two seasons in Major League Soccer.

Gruezo’s Impact in San Jose

Since signing with San Jose in 2023, the 29-year-old defensive midfielder featured prominently in the team’s setup. Over two seasons, Gruezo played 52 MLS matches (48 starts), contributing three assists. While his numbers may not have been flashy, he was a key presence in midfield, known for his defensive work rate, tackling ability, and leadership on the pitch.

Despite his consistent involvement, both parties have decided to move in different directions, allowing the Earthquakes to restructure their squad while giving Gruezo the opportunity to explore new options in his career.

MLS Experience and Career Background

Gruezo was no stranger to Major League Soccer before his stint in San Jose. The Ecuadorian midfielder previously played for FC Dallas from 2016-2019, where he made 98 appearances, scoring three goals and providing seven assists. His time in Dallas was highlighted by strong defensive performances and a crucial role in their 2016 U.S. Open Cup and Supporters’ Shield-winning campaign.

Between his two MLS stints, Gruezo also played in the Bundesliga, representing FC Augsburg in Germany from 2019-2023 before returning to MLS with the Earthquakes.

What’s Next for San Jose and Gruezo?

With this departure, San Jose now has an open designated player spot, which could allow them to target a high-impact signing ahead of the 2025 season. The club will likely look to reinforce their midfield with a player who can dictate play, offer defensive stability, and contribute in attack.

As for Gruezo, he remains a seasoned international player, having represented Ecuador in multiple Copa América tournaments and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Given his experience in Europe, MLS, and international football, he will likely attract interest from clubs across North and South America as well as Europe.

With San Jose reshaping their roster, the Earthquakes will look to build a competitive squad for 2025, while Gruezo prepares for the next chapter of his professional career.
