Referees to Explain VAR Decisions to Crowd in League Cup Semifinals
Referees will use stadium public address systems to explain VAR (Video Assistant Referee) decisions to fans during the League Cup semi-finals next week, the English Football League (EFL) announced on Monday. This trial aims to improve transparency and enhance the matchday experience for supporters.
How the Trial Will Work
As part of the initiative, referees will announce the outcome of VAR reviews, including those related to pitchside monitor consultations and crucial decisions like accidental handballs by a scorer or offside calls. The goal is to provide fans in the stadium with greater clarity about how decisions are made.
In a statement, the EFL said:
“The new pilot forms part of PGMOL’s broader commitment to transparency and embracing technological advancements for the benefit of Match Officials and fans.”
This trial follows successful in-stadium VAR announcements at FIFA tournaments such as the Women’s World Cup in 2023 and the Club World Cup earlier this year.
Scope of the Trial
VAR technology is used in the League Cup only from the semi-final stage onwards. The trial will cover both legs of the upcoming semi-finals:
- Arsenal vs. Newcastle United
- First leg: January 7 at Emirates Stadium
- Tottenham Hotspur vs. Liverpool
- First leg: January 8 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Looking Ahead
If successful, this pilot could pave the way for regular in-stadium VAR announcements in English football, aligning with global efforts to increase referee transparency and fan engagement.
The trial marks another step in integrating VAR with the live fan experience, ensuring spectators at the stadium are better informed about key decisions during high-stakes matches.
