Roger Federer to Serve as Official Starter for 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans
Tennis Legend to Kick Off Iconic Endurance Race in June
April 25 — Le Mans, France
The world of motorsport will welcome a familiar face from the world of tennis this summer as Roger Federer has been named the official starter for the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the most prestigious endurance races in the world.
Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, will lower the French flag at exactly 4:00 p.m. on June 14, officially launching the 93rd edition of the legendary event at the Sarthe circuit in north-west France.
The announcement was made by race organizers on Thursday, and it marks another chapter in Le Mans’ tradition of inviting global sporting icons to start the race. Last year’s starter was Zinedine Zidane, the famed French footballer and World Cup winner.
A Shared Spirit of Precision and Endurance
For Federer, the opportunity is both symbolic and personal. “It’s a huge honour,” the Swiss icon said. “I’ve always been fascinated by the commitment, precision, and resilience that this race demands.”
Federer’s presence at Le Mans underscores how the event transcends motorsport, drawing admiration from athletes across all disciplines. Much like Federer’s approach to tennis — marked by graceful precision and relentless determination — the 24-hour race is a test of endurance, discipline, and mental fortitude.
A Tradition of Excellence and Swiss Pride
The Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), which organizes the race, said Federer’s selection was a natural fit. “It will be a tremendous privilege to welcome Roger Federer as the official starter of the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” said Pierre Fillon, president of the ACO. “His influence extends far beyond tennis.”
Switzerland has deep ties to Le Mans as well. Fellow Swiss athlete Sebastien Buemi has won the race four times, most recently in 2022 with Toyota. Other Swiss winners include Neel Jani in 2016 and Marcel Fässler, who triumphed in 2011, 2012, and 2014.
A Meeting of Legends
As fans gather in June to witness the world’s most elite endurance racing teams compete through day and night, Roger Federer’s presence will add a touch of elegance and star power to an already electric atmosphere.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans is more than just a race — it’s a celebration of human performance under extreme pressure. And in that sense, Federer is right at home.
