South Africa Names Experienced Squad for 2025 Champions Trophy
South Africa has announced a seasoned 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan, with 10 players from their 2023 World Cup roster making the cut. The Proteas will kick off their Group B campaign against Afghanistan in Karachi on February 21, face Australia in Rawalpindi on February 25, and conclude their group stage matches against England in Karachi on March 1.
Key Returns and Squad Composition
Temba Bavuma continues as captain, leading a squad rich in international experience. Notably, fast bowler Anrich Nortje makes his return after recovering from a left toe injury that kept him out of the 2023 World Cup. Fellow pacer Lungi Ngidi, who missed the recent home series against Pakistan due to a groin injury, also rejoins the side.
Coach Rob Walter highlighted the squad’s depth and readiness:
“This squad boasts a wealth of experience, with many players having consistently performed in high-pressure situations. That kind of experience is invaluable in a tournament like this. We’ve retained the core of our World Cup squad while integrating fresh talent,” Walter said during a virtual press conference.
“Our recent performances show we’re capable of reaching the latter stages of global tournaments. Now, we’re eager to take the next step in pursuit of the coveted silverware.”

Path Forward
With a blend of proven match-winners and fresh talent, South Africa aims to go beyond the semi-finals—a barrier they’ve frequently encountered in major ICC tournaments. Their pool games in Pakistan will serve as a critical test of their readiness to claim the Champions Trophy, a title that has eluded them since the tournament’s inception.
The squad’s balance of experienced campaigners and emerging stars positions South Africa as strong contenders in this year’s competition.
