Anrich Nortje Ruled Out of South Africa’s White-Ball Series Against Pakistan

South Africa’s premier fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been dealt another injury blow, ruling him out of the remaining matches in the ongoing Twenty20 series and the upcoming One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against Pakistan. The announcement comes as South Africa prepares for the crucial 50-over fixtures, which serve as a warm-up for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Nortje’s Injury History

Nortje has endured a tough run with injuries, having been sidelined for nine months from September 2023 due to a stress fracture. After a successful recovery, he returned to action during the 2024 T20 World Cup, where South Africa reached the final in June. Unfortunately, the 30-year-old speedster has now suffered a toe injury, which scans on Wednesday confirmed as a fracture. Cricket South Africa (CSA) stated that Nortje will consult medical specialists to determine the next steps for treatment.

Replacement and Squad Updates

Uncapped all-rounder Dayyaan Galiem has been called up as Nortje’s replacement for the remaining two T20 matches. The games are scheduled to take place on Friday in Pretoria and Saturday at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

For the ODI series starting in Paarl on Tuesday, South Africa has announced a strong squad, bringing back several key players who were rested during the T20 series. Captain Temba Bavuma, batters Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs, and all-rounder Marco Jansen make their return. Additionally, experienced campaigners such as Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, and David Miller are set to bolster the side.

In a significant move, 18-year-old fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has received his maiden ODI call-up. The youngster, known for his fiery pace, is seen as a potential future star for South African cricket.

CSA’s Focus on ICC Champions Trophy Preparation

The ODI series against Pakistan holds immense importance as South Africa builds momentum ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy. With a mix of experienced players and emerging talents, the team looks to find the right balance for the marquee event next year.
