Luis Suarez Signs One-Year Extension with Inter Miami
MIAMI: Former Barcelona and Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has agreed to a one-year contract extension with Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami, the club announced. The 37-year-old will continue his career under the guidance of new head coach Javier Mascherano next season.
Since joining Miami at the start of this year, Suarez has scored 25 goals across all competitions, including 20 goals during Miami’s historic regular season, which saw the club break records and win the Supporters’ Shield for the best regular season record.
Despite a strong season, Miami’s playoff run ended in the first round with a loss to Atlanta United. Shortly after, head coach Gerardo Martino departed, and Mascherano, a former Barcelona teammate of Suarez, was appointed as his successor.
“I’m very happy and excited to extend my stay for another year,” said Suarez. “I’m grateful to be here with the fan base, which feels like family to us. We’re deeply connected with them, and we hope to bring them even more joy next year.”
Raul Sanllehi, Miami’s president of football operations, praised Suarez for his leadership both on and off the pitch. “Luis was not only our top scorer this season, but also a true leader in the locker room. His impact has been invaluable.”
Suarez, who recently announced his retirement from international football after scoring 69 goals in 143 appearances for Uruguay, has had an illustrious career in Europe with Ajax, Liverpool, and Atletico Madrid. He also spent a season with Gremio in Brazil before joining Miami.
