Three Pakistan players fined after ODI misconduct vs South Africa

Pakistan Trio Fined for On-Field Misconduct During ODI Win Over South Africa

Three Pakistan players – Shaheen Shah Afridi, Saud Shakeel, and Kamran Ghulam – have been fined by the ICC for breaching the code of conduct during their six-wicket victory over South Africa in the first ODI in Karachi on Wednesday.

The high-scoring match was overshadowed by moments of heated tension, leading to disciplinary action against the Pakistani players.

Shaheen Shah Afridi Penalized for Obstructing Batter

The most notable incident occurred during South Africa’s innings, when fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi was fined 25% of his match fee for intentionally obstructing batter Matthew Breetzke while he attempted a quick single.

As Breetzke sprinted down the pitch, Shaheen moved across his path, resulting in both players squaring up face-to-face before the on-field umpire intervened to defuse the situation.

The deliberate physical obstruction was deemed a violation of the ICC’s Code of Conduct, leading to the fine under a Level 1 offense.

Shakeel and Ghulam Fined for Overzealous Celebration

Shortly after Shaheen’s clash with Breetzke, another heated moment unfolded.
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma was run out following a mix-up, and as he walked off visibly frustrated, Saud Shakeel and Kamran Ghulam celebrated his dismissal aggressively in close proximity to him.

Their actions were interpreted as provocative and disrespectful, resulting in each player being fined 10% of their match fees.

The ICC cited the breach as “using language, actions, or gestures which disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a dismissed batter.”

Players Accept Charges, Avoid Hearings

All three players admitted their guilt and accepted the fines, meaning no formal hearings were required.
The match referee, David Boon, handed down the penalties after consulting with the umpires.

Tense Match Ends in Pakistan’s Victory

Despite the on-field confrontations, Pakistan successfully chased down South Africa’s target to win by six wickets in an entertaining series opener in Karachi.
However, the heated moments left a sour note, with the ICC’s swift action serving as a reminder to players to maintain sportsmanship and composure.
