Stacey Allaster to Step Down as U.S. Open Tournament Director After 2025 Edition
Dec 12 – Stacey Allaster, the trailblazing tournament director of the U.S. Open, will step down from her role following the 2025 Grand Slam edition. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced on Wednesday that Allaster, 61, will transition into a strategic advisory position within the organization after concluding her tenure.
Allaster’s illustrious career in professional tennis spans decades. Before joining the USTA, she served as chairwoman and CEO of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), where she played a pivotal role in advancing the sport. In 2016, Allaster joined the USTA as the chief executive of professional tennis and later made history in 2020 by becoming the first woman to serve as tournament director of the U.S. Open, one of the sport’s most prestigious events.
Reflecting on her career, Allaster expressed gratitude and pride in her contributions to the sport. “It has been an honor to lead such a prestigious tournament as the U.S. Open. I’m proud of the growth and innovation that have propelled it to record-breaking levels of attendance,” she said. The 2023 U.S. Open welcomed over one million fans, setting a historic benchmark for the event.
Allaster emphasized her pride in becoming the first female tournament director of the U.S. Open, calling it a milestone for gender equality in tennis leadership. “This honor will pave the way for more female leaders in the sport I love,” she said. While she prepares to step back from her current role, Allaster remains focused on delivering a successful 2025 tournament, which she described as an inspiring way to close her career in professional tennis.
Tennis icon Billie Jean King lauded Allaster’s impactful leadership. “She championed equality and progress, tirelessly working to elevate the U.S. Open to new heights,” King said. King also credited Allaster’s innovative vision for shaping the tournament into a global spectacle.
As part of her new advisory role, Allaster will work with the USTA to identify and mentor her successor. The selection process for the next U.S. Open tournament director will take place after the 2025 event, ensuring a seamless transition.
Allaster’s legacy leaves a lasting imprint on the U.S. Open and the tennis world, inspiring future generations of leaders to build upon her achievements in promoting equality, innovation, and excellence in the sport.
