Top Golfers Withdraw from The American Express Event in La Quinta
The highly anticipated American Express golf tournament in La Quinta, California, has suffered significant setbacks as the top two players in the Official World Golf Ranking have withdrawn. No. 2 Xander Schauffele announced on Monday that he would not participate due to an undisclosed health issue, following No. 1 Scottie Scheffler’s withdrawal last week due to a hand injury.
Scheffler’s Unfortunate Accident
Scottie Scheffler’s exit stems from a freak kitchen accident on Christmas Day, where he sustained a right-hand injury. Glass fragments had to be surgically removed from his palm, forcing him to miss the event. His absence was already a blow to the tournament, which was set to feature both top-ranked players.
Schauffele’s Surprising Withdrawal
Xander Schauffele’s withdrawal comes as a surprise, given his recent activity. The 31-year-old played at the season-opening Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii, two weeks ago, where he tied for 30th place. He also participated in the inaugural match of the TGL simulated golf competition last week, showing no visible signs of injury. His decision to pull out of The American Express has raised questions about the nature of his health concern.
Mixed History at The American Express
Schauffele has had a varied record at The American Express, missing the cut in 2016 and 2017 but rebounding with back-to-back third-place finishes in 2023 and 2024. A two-time major champion last year, Schauffele captured the PGA Championship at Valhalla and the Open Championship at Royal Troon, further cementing his status as one of golf’s elite players.
Impact on the Field
With the absence of both Scheffler and Schauffele, No. 7 Wyndham Clark is now the only top-10 player remaining in the field. The event will still feature a competitive lineup, with players tackling three courses: the Stadium Course and Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West, as well as La Quinta Country Club. The top 65 professionals (and ties) will advance to the final round on Sunday, held at the Stadium Course.
Last Year’s Champion
In 2024, amateur Nick Dunlap made headlines by securing a stunning one-stroke victory over Christiaan Bezuidenhout, adding intrigue to this year’s competition as rising talents and seasoned professionals vie for the title.
Despite the withdrawals, The American Express continues to promise excitement with its unique multi-course format and the opportunity for emerging players to make their mark.
